This documentary done by Morgan Spurlock (Supersize Me) and executive producer Jason Batemen and Will Arnett and is in a few words: a crock of shit. This movie basically gave nothing of value to any argument for or against male grooming. The only credit I will give is this: it didn't choose a side either direction. Although, they did villainize back hair, that shit is apparently a curse that should be tamed with a razor at any opportunity.
I think what really irritates me about this documentary is that they had genuine researchers and commentators on this "phenomenon" and fell back on stupid commentary by the Judd Apatow crew and taking pot shots at the extreme cases (exceptions don't make the rule, but apparently make for a better documentary). It's genuinly an interesting conversation to have, what constitutes too much grooming, not enough, does it matter, and what should a man do?
It's a topic that deserves a good hard look because it is tied into so much of today's culture and how we think. The messages we receive and filter and rationalize are going to shape in very drastic ways how we look and what we do. Those inspirations are going to be internalized and incorporated into one's style. If the messages that you're drawn to include waxing and shaving it's only reasonable you would do the same. The inverse is also true, if you find chest hair an admirable trait you'll be offended if someone tells you to shave it off. Of course Mansome did none of that all that film did was offer a very shallow look at different trends and take cheeky pot shots whenever it could. Couldn't even be bothered to look at trends from a historical perspective.
The point here is this: fuck Mansome it was an awful documentary.
